Variable Speed Pumps: Are They Worth the Upgrade?

Published March 15, 2026

If you have been putting off upgrading your pool pump, we get it. New equipment is not cheap. But most pool owners do not realize that their pool pump uses more electricity than every other appliance in their house except the air conditioner.

That is not a typo. Your pool pump is the single biggest energy drain in your backyard.

The old single-speed pumps only have one setting: full blast. They push water at maximum power whether your pool needs it or not. A variable speed pump lets you dial it back. You run it at a lower speed for longer, which actually filters your water better and uses a fraction of the electricity.

Most of our customers who make the switch save between $1,000 and $1,500 a year on their electric bill. We have seen some customers who were running oversized single-speed pumps save even more than that.

The best part: the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power gives you a $1,000 rebate when you upgrade. Southern California Edison offers $200. We handle all the paperwork for you. The photographs, the invoices, the application forms, all of it. You do not have to deal with any of that.

We have been installing these pumps for years and we are certified by the manufacturers to do it. We also give you an extended three-year warranty on the pump itself, so you have peace of mind after the install.

If you want to see the math on what you would save with your specific pool, come into the store and we will run the numbers for you. Most people are surprised at how quickly the pump pays for itself.
