Salt Water Pools: The Real Pros and Cons from 40+ Years in the Business

Published February 5, 2026

Salt water pool systems have gotten really popular over the last decade, and we get asked about them almost every day at the store. Here is an honest take based on decades of seeing these systems in action.

How they work:

A salt chlorine generator dissolves regular salt in your pool water, then converts it into chlorine through electrolysis. So you are still sanitizing with chlorine. You are just making it on the spot instead of adding it manually.

The good:

  • The water feels softer on your skin and does not have that strong chlorine smell. A lot of people say it feels more like swimming in natural water.
  • You do not need to buy, carry, or store chlorine products. The system generates it automatically.
  • Day-to-day maintenance is simpler. The system keeps chlorine at a steady level instead of the peaks and valleys you get with manual dosing.
  • Over time, you spend less on chemicals since you are only buying salt, which is cheap.

The not-so-good:

  • The upfront cost is higher. A quality salt system plus installation runs more than a basic chlorine setup.
  • The salt cell needs to be inspected and cleaned regularly. Scale builds up on it and reduces its efficiency.
  • Salt cells wear out and need to be replaced every 3-5 years depending on usage. That is an ongoing cost to factor in.
  • Salt can be corrosive to certain types of pool equipment, coping, and decking if levels get too high. You need to keep the salt level dialed in.
  • You still need to test and balance your water. Salt systems handle chlorine production, but pH, alkalinity, and calcium hardness are still on you.

Our honest recommendation:

If you hate dealing with chlorine and you want a more comfortable swimming experience, salt is worth looking at. But go in with your eyes open about the maintenance and replacement costs. Come talk to us at the store and we can walk through whether it makes sense for your pool and your budget.
